What Is the Crown Chakra?

The Crown Chakra, known as Sahasrara in Sanskrit or simply the Seventh Chakra, is the highest of the major chakras, sitting above the Third Eye Chakra at the crown of the head. 

The Crown Chakra is the connection between the physical body and the spiritual realm, from where spiritual consciousness originates. 

Represented by a thousand-petaled lotus and often associated with the color violet, white or purple (it’s sometimes referred to as the Purple Chakra), the Crown Chakra embodies purity, transcendence, and enlightenment.

When you have a balanced Crown Chakra, you have access to deep wisdom, a sense of purpose, clarity of thought, and the foundations for spiritual awakening.

However an underactive Crown Chakra can leave you with feelings of disconnection, a lack of purpose and feeling spiritually empty.

    How to Do Sahasrara Chakra Meditation

    There are lots of different ways to practice Crown Chakra meditation but here are some simple techniques to follow if you are new to the practice. 

    Step 1: Prepare for the Meditation

    Before you start your meditation practice, find a quiet space where you can be alone and won’t be disturbed. Create a relaxing environment in whatever way works for you.

    • Create a comfortable place to sit. This could be on a yoga mat or cushion on the floor or a comfortable chair. 
    • Try using soft lighting or lighting a chakra candle.
    • Try burning incense or applying some essential oils
    • Try playing music like chakra frequency tracks if that helps clear your mind
    • Try placing chakra crystals near you to clear the energy in the room

    Step 2: Decide on a Time Frame for Your Meditation

    It’s best to start with shorter meditation sessions, gradually extending the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice. Begin with 10 to 15 minutes, increasing to 20 to 30 minutes as your practice evolves.

    Remember, consistency is key, so aim for daily meditation to establish a deep connection with your Crown Chakra.

    Step 3: Crown Chakra Meditation (Step by Step)

    There are lots of different forms of chakra meditation. In this step by step guide I’ve combined visualization, breathing practices and affirmations. Allow yourself the flexibility to explore different techniques and durations, adapting your meditation practice to align with your evolving spiritual journey.

    • Find a comfortable position and take gentle breaths.
    • Bring all your awareness and attention to your breathing and close your eyes.
    • Notice how your body moves with each breath—inhale and exhale, slow and gentle. Feel your body relax and all your stress and worries start to melt away. Keep going with this breathing practice until you feel totally relaxed. 
    • Reconnect with your body. Feel the points of contact with the surface beneath you. Notice the support it provides.
    • Now, bring your awareness to the top of your head, the location of your Crown Chakra. Visualize a glowing violet light shining brightly at this center.
    • Feel its gentle and expansive energy enveloping your entire being, creating a sense of unity and oneness with the universe. With each breath, allow this light to grow stronger and more radiant, illuminating your spiritual path.
    • As you continue to breathe deeply, imagine the energy of your Crown Chakra expanding and opening like a blossoming lotus flower, reaching towards the heavens.
    • As you breathe deeply and rhythmically, allow yourself to surrender to the divine flow of energy that surrounds you.
    • Use affirmations to strengthen the visualization even more, such as “I am connected to the divine source of all creation” and “I am a vessel of divine light and love.”
    • You could also try using the Crown Chakra mantra “Om. Say the word slowly, allowing the vibrations to fill the air around you and invigorate your Crown Chakra. Repeat it as many times as you like. 
    • Allow yourself to be filled with a sense of deep gratitude and appreciation for the gift of spiritual awakening and enlightenment.
    • To end the practice, gently bring your awareness back to your physical body. Wiggle your fingers and toes, slowly reawakening your senses. Take a final deep breath, and when you’re ready, gently open your eyes.

    Tools to Support Your Crown Chakra Meditation

    There are several tools you can use to enhance your spiritual connection during Crown Chakra meditation. Some of my favorites are:

    Crown Chakra Affirmations

    Chakra affirmations are a powerful way to focus your mind, reprogramme your mental pathways and direct healing energy. Try Crown Chakra affirmations such as:

    • “I am connected to the wisdom of the universe.”
    • “I trust the journey of my higher self.”
    • “I am a vessel of divine light and love.”

    Repeat these affirmations during your meditation, allowing them to permeate your consciousness and elevate your spiritual awareness.

    Crown Chakra Mudras

    Mudras are sacred hand signs which have been used in yoga for hundreds of years to direct energy to different parts of the body. Practicing mudras during meditation can help to connect your physical and emotional self and facilitate the flow of divine energy. 

    The following mudras are particularly healing for the Seventh Chakra:

    • Sahasrara Mudra: Position your hands in front of your stomach. Interlock the fingers by pointing the ring fingers upwards and crossing the rest with the left thumb under the right.
    • Thousand Petal Mudra: Sit with your palms facing up. Bring the tips of your index fingers and thumbs together to form a circle, while keeping the rest of your fingers straight. 

    Crown Chakra Mantras

    Mantras are ancient sounds that create vibrations which promote spiritual alignment and energetic harmony. 

    Some chakra healing mantras you can use for the Crown Chakra include:

    • Om: Chanting “Om” helps attune your energy to the divine frequencies, fostering a sense of oneness with the universe.
    • So’ham (Sohum): Connecting with the breath, this mantra translates to “I am that.” As you inhale, silently say “So,” and as you exhale, say “Ham,” reinforcing the recognition of your unity with the divine.
    • Aum Namah Shivaya: This mantra acknowledges the divine within. Chanting it promotes spiritual growth, enlightenment, and an understanding of your higher self.

    Sound Healing

    Sound healing uses the vibrational qualities of tones and frequencies to restore balance in the energy centers. Each chakra has a particular musical note and frequency which it resonates with – for the Crown Chakra these are 963 Hz and note B.

    There are lots of different ways you can generate these soothing sounds such as:

    • Tuning Forks: These instruments produce pure tones to facilitate energy flow, clarity, and connection.
    • Crystal Singing Bowls: Singing bowls emit harmonic frequencies. Their gentle tones encourage a meditative state, guiding you toward spiritual awakening and inner peace. Try striking a singing bowl at the beginning and end of your practice. 
    • Binaural Beats: By presenting two frequencies that are slightly different to each ear, binaural beats create a perceived third frequency. This induces brainwave synchronization, promoting deep meditation and Crown Chakra activation.
    • Chakra Frequency Tracks: You can find meditative tracks with specific vibrational frequencies to focus your mind and support energetic balance. Look for tracks with the frequency 963 Hz for the Crown Chakra. 

    Crown Chakra Crystals

    Crystals serve as conduits for spiritual energy during meditation, amplifying the alignment of the Crown Chakra. Try holding them during your practice or placing them close to you.

    Here are some examples of crystals that can enhance your meditative experience:

    • Amethyst: This regal crystal facilitates spiritual growth, intuition, and tranquility, guiding you toward states of meditation and higher awareness.
    • Clear Quartz: As a versatile and powerful amplifier, quartz magnifies the energy of the Crown Chakra. It cleanses the mind, promotes clarity, and opens channels for divine guidance, stimulating a harmonious connection to universal consciousness.
    • Selenite: Selenite has a healing energy which purifies the Crown Chakra, enhances mental clarity, and cleanses negative energy. 

    Crown Chakra Essential Oils

    Integrating essential oils into your Crown Chakra meditation can deepen your spiritual practice and promote overall well-being. These aromatic oils, extracted from plants, carry unique properties that resonate with the crown chakra’s energy.

    Lavender oil, with its calming essence, facilitates a peaceful connection, while frankincense encourages spiritual growth. Another option is cedarwood oil, known for its grounding effect that complements the Crown Chakra’s higher vibrations.

    Try burning these oils in an oil burner, applying them to your skin with a carrier oil or burning a chakra candle with essential oils to enhance your meditation. 

    Chakra Meditation Apps

    Chakra meditation apps offer guided sessions which can be useful for both beginners and experienced practitioners. I regularly use Insight Timer which has a range of chakra meditation tracks to follow.

    Aura and Calm are also worth considering, particularly for beginners, as they have a range of guided meditation programmes to help you build your practice. 

    Wrapping Up

    Crown Chakra meditation is a powerful gateway to spiritual enlightenment and holistic well-being. Incorporating it into your daily routine can help you find spiritual balance, peace and even physical benefits like better sleep.
