What is the Sacral Chakra?

The Chakras are said to be the energy centers at which the physical and spiritual parts of our being converge, according to Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

There are seven chakras in each of us which are aligned along the spine, a bit like spinning wheels of energy. The Sacral Chakra is the Second Chakra and can be found in the lower abdomen, above the Root Chakra and below the Solar Plexus Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is also known as the Svadhisthana Chakra in Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, Svadhisthana can be translated as “the dwelling place of the self” or as “to take delight in.” As these names suggest, the Sacral Chakra is connected to our emotional and sexual energy, as well as our capacity to adapt to change.

In the physical body it regulates various bodily processes including those related to our genitals, bladder and kidneys. On an emotional level, it governs our relationships with ourselves and others, as well as our creative and artistic expression.

The Sacral Chakra, or Svadhisthana, corresponds to the water element. Just like the element of water, it is all about fluidity, adaptability, and freedom—whether it be sexual, emotional, or creative.

It is represented by the color orange which sums up the energy and vitality of this energy center.

A healthy Sacral Chakra is associated with the following:

  • Sensuality and passion
  • Healthy sexual and emotional relationships
  • Spontaneity and playfulness
  • Emotional balance
  • Creative expression
  • Divine femininity

An imbalanced Sacral Chakra is associated with the following:

  • Sexual repression or dysfunction
  • Compulsive behaviors
  • Emotional repression
  • Low confidence or self worth
  • A lack of drive and inspiration
  • Lack of creativity

But once you know you need to heal your Sacral Chakra, what’s the best way to go about it? Here are some techniques you can use to open your Sacral Chakra.

Sacral Chakra Yoga Poses

The Sacral Chakra is all about fluidity so it makes sense that movement can help you to heal this energy center.

Yoga poses and asanas are a gentle but effective way to boost your physical and emotional wellbeing. Yoga poses which focus on the hips, lower back and abdomen are particularly useful for boosting the flow of energy to the Second Chakra.

Here are some powerful yoga asanas to promote the flow of life force energy to and from the Sacral Chakra:

  • Supta Baddha Konasana, or Reclined Bound Angle Pose:
    • Bend your knees and let them fall to the floor while bringing the soles of your feet together.
    • Place your palms on your belly, and feel it rise up and down as you breathe deeply.

Sacral Chakra Essential Oils

Aromatherapy is another simple but enjoyable way to get in touch with your chakras.

Consider floral scents like ylang-ylang, patchouli, and rose to help boost your Sacral Chakra. These uplifting scents are perfect for reinvigorating your creative energies. Other helpful Sacral Chakra oils include:

There’s lots of different ways to use oils. You can apply them topically or add them to a warm bath or oil burner to boost the energies around your home. You could also use them with chakra healing crystals and stones such as orange calcite or tiger’s eye to supercharge your Sacral Chakra energy

Just be careful to always check the dilution before applying an oil directly to your skin – some essential oils can be surprisingly strong!

Sacral Chakra Mantras

If you’re the kind of person who finds music and sound reinvigorating then you could find Sacral Chakra mantras really effective.

Mantras are sounds or phrases which you repeat to yourself. These sounds can help to rewire the brain, boosting positive neural pathways and helping to counteract negative programming.

There is a specific sound mantra for each of the chakras. The mantra sound for the Sacral Chakra is vam. It is thought that when you say “vam” it produces vibrations that can reinvigorate and heal the Sacral Chakra.

The great thing about mantras is you can incorporate them into your daily life in lots of different ways – you could say a mantra while practicing yoga or say a mantra during your meditation practice to focus the mind. As you make the noise, imagine the healing vibrations traveling straight to your blocked Sacrum.

What Happens When Your Sacral Chakra is Blocked?

Blocked or overactive chakras can have a negative effect on both your emotional and physical health, but it can be tricky to know exactly which of your chakras are blocked.

If you’re experiencing any of the following problems, then your Sacral Chakra could be blocked:

Emotional Problems From a Sacral Chakra Blockage

Feeling emotionally volatile or out of whack can be one of the first signs of a blocked or imbalanced Sacral Chakra. Look out for negative emotions like:

  • Emotional detachment
  • Isolation
  • Insecurity and anxiety
  • Loneliness
  • Obsessive or addictive behaviors
  • Feeling deflated and uninspired

When the Svadhisthana is blocked, its creative and passionate energies are shut off. It often becomes a vicious cycle – without the positive energies of the Svadhisthana, you can feel detached from others which can lead to you feeling lonely and anxious.

If you suspect your Sacral Chakra might be blocked, pay attention to your behavior and emotions as they are usually the first indicator that your chakras need healing.

Physical Problems From a Sacral Chakra Blockage

When your Sacral Chakra is out of alignment, you could experience the following physical ailments:

  • Persistent lower back ache
  • Fertility and reproductive issues
  • Bladder and kidney issues
  • Abdominal and pelvic problems
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue and anemia

What Do We Mean by an Overactive Sacral Chakra?

An overactive Sacral Chakra often means an overabundance of emotion. When it’s overactive, you may experience:

  • Huge emotional highs and lows
  • Feeling overwhelmed and out of control
  • The desire to escape and run away from your emotions

Emotional highs and lows are a common symptom of an overactive Sacral Chakra, but how they manifest themselves will depend on the individual.

For example you could find yourself lashing out or acting in a dominating and manipulative manner towards others in an effort to maintain control. However, you could find yourself shutting down your emotions and becoming indifferent to everyone around you.

The Second Chakra is incredibly important as it’s the source from which our sexual and creative energies flow. When it’s functioning properly we experience joy, pleasure, and inspiration – all the good stuff life has to offer!

Like all the chakras, the Sacral Chakra can benefit from lots of different healing practices – meditation, mantras, crystals, aromatherapy to name a few – so take some time to find some chakra healing techniques which work for you.
