What Is the Root Chakra?

The Root Chakra, known in Sanskrit as the Muladhara Chakra, is the first and most foundational of the seven main chakras in the human body.

Located at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra connects us with the earth (it’s also represented by the element earth) and helps establish our sense of grounding and stability. It is responsible for our primal instincts and represents our connection to nature.

How to Do Root Chakra Meditation

Root Chakra meditation helps connect us to the Mother Nature’s grounding energy and can be done in a few simple steps:

Prepare the Space

  • Find a quiet, distraction-free space to practice your meditation. Make sure the room is a comfortable temperature.
  • Dim the lights to create a calming ambience. You could also light a chakra candle or incense and play some relaxing music (more on that below!).
  • Clear away any clutter and have a meditation cushion, pillow, or blanket ready to sit on.
  • You may want to have a timer handy to time your meditation. 

Set Your Intention

  • Take a few minutes to reflect on your intention for this practice. 
  • You could set a specific Root Chakra affirmation such as “I am grounded and connected to the earth.” “I am safe and secure.” “I am confident and resilient.
  • Repeating an intention can help direct your mind during meditation.

Prepare Your Body

  • Sit on your cushion/pillow in a comfortable cross-legged position or on a chair with your feet flat on the floor.
  • Check that your spine is upright but relaxed. Your shoulders should be rolled back. Place your hands gently on your lap, palms facing up.
  • Gently close your eyes or soften your gaze downward.
  • Take 5 deep, slow breaths to begin centering yourself.

Visualization

  • Imagine a swirling vortex of red energy at the base of your spine, by your sacrum where your Root Chakra is located.
  • Visualize this vortex grounding you, like the deep roots of a tree. Imagine these roots extending from the vortex down into the earth.
  • As you inhale, draw earth energy up through your roots, into the vortex.
  • As you exhale, release any negativity or tension down through the roots to be neutralized in the earth.
  • Repeat this visualization for 5 minutes or more, focusing on feelings of stability and connection. 
  • Recite your chosen Root Chakra affirmation to yourself to deepen your connection with your Root Chakra energy. 

Finishing the Practice

  • Take a few more deep breaths, feeling grounded and present.
  • When you’re ready to bring your meditation to a close, give thanks for your practice and set the intention to carry this stability through your day.
  • When ready, gently open your eyes and take your time standing up.

Practice Regularly

  • Aim to practice this meditation for 10-15 minutes daily to balance your Root Chakra. Be patient and consistent, the more often you practice the easier you will find it to focus.
  • Notice how you feel more centered, confident, and grounded over time. Adjust the practice as needed.
  • You may wish to journal after each meditation to track insights and progress.

Examples of Root Chakra affirmations include:

  • “I am completely grounded and connected to the earth.”
  • “I feel safe, secure, and protected.”
  • “I am strong, resilient, and have all I need within me.”
  • “My body and mind are healthy, whole, and rooted in wellness.”

You can repeat these affirmations aloud or mentally during meditation. Writing them down on paper or notecards and placing them where you will see them regularly is also impactful.

Root Chakra Mantras

Attune your energetic vibrations with mantras. Mantras are ancient syllables, sometimes known as seed sounds, that carry a concentrated vibration which can retune and rebalance our energetic body.

The Root Chakra is attuned to the mantra “Lam.” Chanting this mantra while visualizing the swirling red energy of your Root Chakra can help to further activate this energy center

As you chant, feel it resonating within your spine, hips, legs, and feet – strengthening your sense of connection to the earth.

Prana Mudra is particularly useful for directly life force energy towards your Base Chakra. This simple gesture simply requires you to keep your index and middle fingers straight while bringing the tips of your thumbs, ring fingers and little fingers to touch.
