What is the Solar Plexus Chakra?

The chakras are energy centers or spinning vortexes moving vital energy around our bodies. When translated literally, the Sanskrit word chakra means “wheel”.

There are 7 primary chakras:

The Solar Plexus Chakra, also known as Manipura, is associated with the color yellow and the fire element. It is directly linked to our sense of self, purpose, personal ability, as well as individual will, metabolism and digestion.

As a fire sign, the Manipura Chakra can purify the past and energize our progress towards spiritual development and mental awareness. This chakra is where “gut instincts” are from, signalling to us and offering guidance in our daily lives.

This chakra is the center of our own identity, and it is sometimes referred to as our “Ego”. It gives us the strength and will to follow our real path and create the life we want.

Where is the Solar Plexus Chakra Located?

The location of the Solar Plexus Chakra is in the stomach, just before the trunk artery or aorta. It is sometimes connected to the celiac plexus, which is a complex system of spreading nerves.

The Solar Plexus is also considered to be a component of the central nervous system and is linked to the kidneys, abdomen, liver and adrenal glands.

What Blocks the Solar Plexus Chakra?

Stress, conflict, illness or emotional upset can cause blockages or imbalances in our energy centers.

Past trauma is often held in our body and can affect our behaviors and thought patterns for many years to come. For example, anyone who has experienced bullying, a strict upbringing or other physical or mental abuse could find that they have an imbalanced Solar Plexus Chakra.

Solar Plexus Chakra healing, as well as other activities which support wellbeing can be vital tools for helping us to heal past traumas and restore our energy levels.

Solar Plexus Chakra Yoga Poses

Yoga is one of the most powerful tools for realigning and healing the Solar Plexus Chakra.

The Bow Pose, Mountain Pose, Boat Pose, Lion Pose, Seated Spinal Twist, and Warrior Pose are all yoga poses (sometimes known as asanas) that can help heal the Manipura Chakra. These poses all strengthen the core muscles you need for inner strength, while driving energy and blood flow to your digestive system.

To perform Boat pose at home:

  1. Sit on a mat and extend your legs in front of you.
  2. Raise your feet off the floor and lean back slightly
  3. Pull in your stomach muscles and keep your spine straight as you open your chest.
  4. Keep your arms straight, palms facing down in paralell with the floor.
  5. Hold for a few breaths before relaxing back down to the floor with control.

Beyond yoga poses, physical activity or movement in general can be very effective in balancing your life force energy. Exercising can help you to build your sense of strength and power so you can grow physically and spiritually.

Essential oils can have a significant impact on the mind, body and soul. You can also apply them directly to pulse points on the body such as the wrists, neck, temples, inner elbows, or behind the ears

Oils like lemongrass, ginger, jasmine, green tea, sandalwood or myrrh can help boost feelings of self-assurance and ignite your inner power. You can use these scents on their own or blend them together.

Solar Plexus Chakra Stones

Chakra crystals are a useful tool to help you connect with your Manipura Chakra. You can store them at home, wear them as jewelry, or place them on your physical body as you meditate.

This chakra is related to the color yellow, in part because of its connection with the sun, and so it is not surprising that many solar plexus stones have yellow tones.

The best crystals for balancing your Solar Plexus Chakra include amber, topaz, citrine, tiger’s eye, yellow calcite, yellow jasper and yellow quartz.

Sound Therapy

Every living being emits certain vibrations or frequencies. By tuning into these frequencies we can connect with our inner energy and help remove energy blockages.

Each primary chakra emits a specific frequency, also known as a Solfeggio Frequency. The frequency for the Solar Plexus is 528 Hz.

There are lots of different instruments you can use for sound therapy, but one popular method involves using singing bowls. You can find chakra singing bowls tuned to the specific frequency of each of the chakras. When struck, these singing bowls give off vibrations which can help reset the frequency of your chakras and reestablish harmony in your system.

Solar Plexus Chakra Mantras

Mantras differ from affirmations as they are more concerned with sounds and the healing vibrations they emit, whereas affirmations are focused on positive statements designed to reprogram your thought patterns.

Mantras differ in length but a Bija mantra is a one syllable word. In Sanskit, Bija mantra translates literally as “seed mantra”. Most people will be familiar with the widely used mantra “Om” which is said to be the first sound in the universe.

The Bija mantra for the Manipura Chakra is the word “Ram.

Mantras are often used during meditation. You can also combine mantras with mudras – gestures involving the hands and fingers. Together these practices can can help you build inner strength.

Mudras

Mudras are hand gestures commonly used in yogic practices, believed to have a significant impact on the body, mind, and overall well-being, influencing physical health, emotions, and spirituality.

Mudras help us connect to and channel the energy running through us. Different mudras perform different roles – some relax and calm us while others reenergise us. Each of the chakras benefits from different mudras.

Effective mudras for the Solar Plexus include Hakini Mudra, Linga Mudra, and Rudra Mudra. To perform Hakini Mudra:

  • Bring your hands to your Solar Plexus with your palms together.
  • Press your fingertips together and leave space between your palms.
  • Spread your gingers outwards with your middle finger pointing straight forward and your thumbs pointing towards your Solar Plexus Chakra.

Journaling involves writing down your thoughts and feelings without judgment in order to unearth hidden thoughts and emotions. Chakra journaling allows you to reflect on the emotions and experiences which could be blocking a particular chakra and explore what you need to do to rebalance this energy center,

Journaling has been shown to help us de-stress, reduce anxiety and improve mental clarity. This helps us to be more present in the moment and connect more deeply to our energetic body.

All you need to journal is a quiet space and a pen and paper. It can help to use a chakra Solar Plexus journal prompt such as “What makes me feel confident?”. Let your mind wander as you ponder this statement and just write whatever comes into your mind without question or judgement.

Solar Plexus Meditation

Meditation is a powerful way to calm your mind and help you connect to your inner self. Studies show that it has powerful benefits for our mental health and treating physical issues like back pain. There are many different ways to meditate, but generally it is recommended that you:

  • Sit with your shoulders back and spine straight. Relax your muscles and close your eyes then take some deep breaths. You should inhale through your nose and then exhale through the mouth.
  • Focus your attention on your Manipura Chakra, its location in your abdomen, just a few inches above the navel.
  • Since the Solar Plexus Chakra is linked to the yellow color, imagine a yellow glow above your navel, imagine it slowly expanding to the bottom of the rib cage and making this whole area relaxed and warm. Rest in this sensation for about 3-5 minutes.
  • When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes. You could add positive affirmations afterwards.
